The Devil’s Hole — Tracks born in 1968
Marcus was born in 1974 and completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons) at the University of Western Australia, Perth in 1997. His creative practice covers an interrelated terrain of video, projection, installation, inflatable sculpture, photography, and direction and design for performance. Selected group shows include Linden1968, Linden Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne (2008); SILVER: ARTRAGE 25, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (2008); Vida Telefonica (with The Tissue Culture & Art Project), ARCO, Madrid (2008); New disorder, Old Berlin, Perth (2007); BioTechnique (with TC&A), YBCA Galleries, San Francisco (2007); Still living: Biennale of Electronic Arts Perth (with TC&A), breadbox (2007); Winners are grinners, Meat Market, Melbourne and PICA (2006); Supermart, breadbox, Perth (2005); and Wild frontier, The Bank, Perth and Downtown Art Space, Adelaide (2003). Canning has been executive director of ARTRAGE Inc. since 2002, directing the annual ARTRAGE Festival and Northbridge Festival whilst developing and managing The Bakery Artrage Complex and breadbox gallery. He sat on the Australia Council’s New Media Arts Board (2002–05), chaired the federal DCITA Festivals Australia Committee (2002–07) and was involved in establishing the Perth artist run initiative, Jacksue Gallery (1996–2000).
