Brendan van Hek and Consuelo Cavaniglia, artists

Brendan Van Hek was born in 1968 in Perth, where he continues to reside. His current practice is concerned with urban renewal and its impact in shaping the cultural identity of a place. Working across various media his drawings, light works and sculptural installations consider the importance of preservation in determining the direction of a city’s development. Solo exhibitions include Urban Oasis, City of Perth 3x3 Urban Art Project, Forrest Place, Perth (2008); lead heart, Sherman Galleries Artbox, Sydney (2007); and City Building, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (2006). Group exhibitions include Neon, Anna Schwartz Gallery, Sydney (2008); Economy, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (2007); Paper Works, Moores Building Contemporary Art Gallery, Fremantle (2006); Land of the Giants, Moores Building Contemporary Art Gallery (2005); and Flux2, Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, Perth (2005). In 2007 Van Hek was the recipient of a three-month Gunnery Studio residency at Artspace in Woolloomooloo, Sydney.

Consuelo was born in Rome, Italy in 1971 and is a Perth-based artist and emerging curator. She graduated from the University of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Arts (Visual Art and Languages) in 1993 and then completed a Bachelor of Arts (Art) with Honours from Curtin University in 2002. Cavaniglia has exhibited widely in Western Australian art spaces, including: De-function, Moores Building Contemporary Art Gallery, Fremantle (2006); Supermart, Deck the Halls, Collared, Artage Festival (2005); and Flux, Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, Perth (2003). Cavaniglia has curated several exhibitions, including Moving light, Fremantle Arts Centre (2008), Economy, Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (2007) and Land of the Giants with Brendan Van Hek, Moores Building Contemporary Art Gallery, Fremantle (2006). Cavaniglia’s recent art practice has focused on sculptural and installation works that address ideas about the usage and subdivision of built up spaces and environments.
